The “founder” is a Canadian nurse named Rene Caisse (1892-1978). Nurse Caisse found the formula while caring for a woman who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was unable to afford surgery. The woman sought help from a native Ojibwa medicine man who gave her this recipe for a tonic. The Ojibwa natives have been preparing this cleansing tea/brew for generations. After taking this herb mixture, the woman recovered from her breast cancer and it never returned. She passed the recipe to Rene Caisse who became interested in using it for her terminally ill patients.
In the early 1920’s, Rene Caisse began giving this four-herb mixture to her patients, which were primarily terminally ill with cancer in a brewed liquid form of “tea”. She even administered this tea to her aunt, who was terminally ill with stomach and liver cancer. Her aunt also recovered and her cancer never retuned. Rene Caisse began calling the tea “Essiac” which is her name spelled backwards.
The original formula given to Rene Caisse consisted of four herbs. Many herbalists today use this shortened version, which is available as public domain. This version contains Sheep Sorrell, Burdock Root, Slippery Elm Bark and Turkish Rhubarb Root. There are still many companies operating today that make this original version available for sale. You can even go on the Internet and see the formula and for those adventurous enough, can buy the herbs and blend it yourself!
While in Canada, nurse Caisse began experimenting with the formula in conjunction with Dr. R. O. Fisher. She continued testing other herbs with the original four, until she left Canada and partnered with Dr. Charles Brusch (noted scientist and personal physician to President John F. Kennedy) in 1959. Nurse Caisse spent 8 years at the Brusch Medical Research Center in Cambridge, MA. working with Dr. Brusch to create the most effective formula for Essiac, which is now the eight herb Essiac. This eight-herb formula is proprietary, and it is this formula we supply through Herbal Balance for Life, Inc.
There is nothing wrong with the original four-herb formula and thousands have used it successfully. The eight years of scientific experiments and continued testing by Dr. Brusch and Nurse Rene Caisse has established, without question, this eight herb formula to be superior to the original four herb recipe and Dr. Brusch has stated: “Clinically, on patients suffering from pathologically proven cancer, our Essiac reduces pain and causes a recession in the growth; patients have gained weight and shown an improvement in their general health….. Remarkably beneficial results were obtained even on those cases at the “end of the road” where it proved to prolong life and the quality of that life……the doctors do not say the Essiac is a cure, but they do say it is of benefit.”
It is important to note that through clinical testing; the additional four herbs that have been added augment. modify and improve the functionality of the original formula, prove to be far superior in terms of effectiveness and yield the best results.
The brewed tea and the soft gel are identical in terms of potency. The reason we believe the soft gels are more effective is simply because we know that the amount of herbs are always 100% consistent in terms of production. The brewed version can be brewed with errors in terms of the amount of water used in the brewing process (more or less) and in measuring the dosage in terms of ounces you will be taking (more or less). It is our opinion that having a mechanical automated production of soft gels which guarantees continuity in the amount of Essiac per soft gel is a better solution than estimating the brewing process.
The secret is the synergistic blend of various herbs. It has been known for generations that in Europe, Sheep Sorrel has been used to break down tumors, Slippery Elm has been used to regulate the digestive tract and Watercress has been an effective general tonic, abundant in Vitamin C. The Burdock Root is a powerful blood purifier and treatment for swelling and fever. Red Clover is a rich source of isoflavens, which have been studied for their effectiveness in treating some forms of cancer. Turkish Rhubarb Root helps to cleanse the liver and detoxify the colon and Blessed Thistle is most effective in relieving liver congestion. Kelp is a rich source of minerals including iodine to maintain a healthy thyroid, effective metabolism and boost our immune system.
These organic herbs, in a proprietary blend, actually cleanse and detoxify our bodies by eliminating free radicals and toxins that invade our cellular structure and bring our system into proper ph balance. When toxins are flushed from our body, it allows our digestive and immune system to operate at optimal functionality.
Essiac does not cure disease but enables the body to cure itself of disease.
No. Many of our customers use Essiac as “maintenance” to keep their body free from toxins and free radicals. It boosts their immune system, keeps the digestive tract operating at optimal efficiency and keeps your body ph in balance. Keeping your body in an alkaline state will prevent illness and disease from growing.
Our Essiac eight herb blend has also been used by those suffering from AIDS, arthritis, diabetes, obesity, liver disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Generally speaking, most people experience reduced pain, increased feeling of energy and productivity, more restful sleep and mental clarity, improved athletic performance, noticeable feelings of less stress, along with regular, easy and clean bowel movements.
We would recommend a gradual regimen, which can take from three months to six months. It all depends on the individual. This depends on the amount of your exposure to toxins, including chemicals, pollution and diet. Your personal ability to purge toxins is also another factor. This three/six month window is based on the maintenance level of two ounces of Essiac taken twice per day.
Those seeking a shorter two to four week detoxification plan will require nine to eighteen ounces of Essiac tea per day.
During the first month or so of taking Essiac, you may experience reactions such as, mild diarrhea, and a runny nose (mucous drainage).
The reactions you feel are the toxins being eliminated from your body. As you eliminate these toxins, these side effects will diminish and simply fade away.
If you cannot tolerate these reactions, you can “flush your body” with a half gallon to one gallon of water per day. You may also reduce your daily dosage down to one ounce, twice per day or even one once per day in total.
In most cases, side effects are so mild they are easily tolerated.
Essiac by nature wants to identify foreign matter in the body such as chemicals, toxins and waste stored in our digestive tact and other parts of the body. The fact that your immune system could be at peak performance when fueled with a daily maintenance of Essiac can potentially accelerate the body’s natural reaction to reject foreign implants.
We strongly suggest that if you are currently taking Essiac to stop before any surgery and advise your physicians of how long and how much your daily regime of Essiac consists of. Ask your doctor when you should stop taking Essiac prior to surgery.
After surgery, or outpatient procedure to install any medical implants, we strongly urge you to consult with your physicians prior to resuming or even starting an Essiac regime. Based on your individual physical condition and how your body has tolerated implants, your doctor may want you to wait as long as one year after replacement surgery to resume Essiac or not to take it all. Do not resume taking Essiac without consulting with your physicians.

The soft gels are made of 5 of the herbs in actual powder form and three of the herbs in an extract format. The reason for that is the ultimate size of the soft gel, so that it is easy to swallow. Adding all 8 herbs in the original herb configuration would create a soft gel too large to be safe to swallow.
Yes, you can give this to your dog in a diluted amount. I assume you are talking about the brewed version of our Essiac. If we are on the same page and you are talking about your brewed version of tea that should be taken 2 ounces at a time, depending on the size of the dog, I would give only 2 ounces per day. If you are talking about our soft gels, you can take one soft gel, wrap it in some turkey or ham and give the dog only one soft gel per day.
